Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment emphasizing structural and mechanical problems within the body. It focuses on the musculo-skeletal system (the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue) and the way in which this inter-relates with the body as a whole. Osteopaths diagnose and treat faults which occur because of injury, stress or perhaps disease, to enable the musculo-skeletal system to work as efficiently as possible; allowing the body to restore itself to normal function.

The treatment involves a variety of techniques including manipulation, massage and manual traction which can help with many conditions including:

* Back pain and disc injuries
* Trapped nerves and sciatica
* Sports injuries
* Repetitive strain injuries
* Pregnancy related back pains
* Arthritis
* Most conditions where the body or joints are stiff or painful

Ongoing maintenance treatments can also prevent the recurrence of problems. This may include postural advice and individual exercise programs.

NHS

Your GP will be able to refer you to an osteopath if it is available in your area. An increasing number of GP’s are working with osteopaths and many GP’s are also trained to provide osteopathy or have complimentary therapists in their practices. However, you will not have an automatic right to an osteopath, even if it is available in your area. Your GP will decide whether to refer you or not.

You don’t need a GP referral to visit a private osteopath for a session. If you contact a clinic or therapist for private treatment, make sure they are fully qualified and a member of the General Osteopathic Council (the organisation that regulates osteopaths).
